SAF Brake Pads convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle into thermal energy through friction. Two brake pads are included in the brake with their friction surfaces facing the rotor. When hydraulic braking is employed, the caliper clamps or squeezes two brake pads together against the spinning rotor to slow and stop the vehicle. When the brake pads heat up from contact with the rotor, it transfers a small amount of friction material to the disc and leaves a dark grey coating on the disc. The brake pads and discs then "stick" to each other, providing the frictional force that stops the vehicle.
In disc brakes, there are usually two pads per disc rotor, which work together. They are held in place and driven upright by calipers attached to the hub or suspension. However, racing calipers can use up to six pads with different friction characteristics in a staggered fashion for optimum performance. Brake disc wear rates may vary depending on material properties, vehicle weight and driving speed. Brake pads usually have to be replaced periodically (depending on the pad material) to prevent brake fading. Most brake pads are equipped with a way to alert the driver when they need to do so. A common technique is to create a small central groove, which eventually disappears due to wear indicating the end of the pad's useful life. Other methods include putting thin strips of soft metal into grooves so that the brakes make a screeching sound when exposed. Soft metal wear pads can also be embedded in the pad material to close the circuit when the brake pads are worn, illuminating the dashboard warning light.
